Ha Lau market was formed in 1965, which was an exchange and buying-selling place for around 70% of Dao ethnic people. However, its value gradually languished because of some reasons. “Perceiving the importance of preserving traditional culture and serving experience’s tourists, Tien Yen district took care of rebuilding the market to promote local tourism.” Mr. Ta Vinh Thang, Head of Culture and Information Department said.

In the last days of October, 2018, Tien Yen district has recreated and organized annually the fair on every Sunday,  with an area of over 1000 square meters at the centre of Ha Lau market. Not only the market is a business point, but also it retains unique cultural values of Dao ethnic people and others in the region. Visitors are able to participate in folk games such as chicken badminton, kayaking on the river or enjoying traditional songs, recreating “color giving” ceremonial, brocade embroidering performance…

To improve the fair’s speciality, in 2022 Tien Yen district made a combination between Dao ethnic minority Sport, Culture festival and Ha Lau market as it expanded its scale to express the beauties of local culture and fascinate travellers. From 2024, the fair was lasting 2 days with a lot of exciting activities. After the ceremonial part finished, the festive part began with interesting games like tug of war, stick pushing, crossbow… that show solidarity, strength and mentality. Otherwise, a football match between Dao Thanh Y and San Chi ethnic people also brought thrilling and happy moments.

In addition, recent fair seasons step by step had various experiences such as hiring customs to check-in, relaxing by deeping feet in Chinese traditional medicine of Dao people, taking part in folk games such as catching chickens blindfolded, tossing sticks, smashing pots, rowing arrays… The organizers also invested in redecorating the market gate, stage and check-in corners to create a special and attractive impression for visitors.
