Hoanh Mo commune, Quang Ninh province is a border and highland locality that is well-known for its great tourism development potentials of cultural, ecological and border travel. With these diversified advantages, it is striving to become a remarkable highlight of Quang Ninh province’s tourism growth strategy.

The commune is established in the consolidation foundation of the nature area and population of Hoanh Mo and Dong Van communes. After merging, its area is mounted to 137.91 square kilometers, population is 9000 one, for which the majority of Dao, Tay, San Chi ethnic people take 94%.
In the field of services and tourism, the commune is actively promoting border trade, creating the best possible conditions for businesses and investors to attract capital and complete the synchronized infrastructure of the Hoanh Mo border-gate economic zone. In particular, it aims to effectively leverage the advantages of the Hoanh Mo (Vietnam) – Dongzhong (China) bilateral border gates, not only in import-export activities but also in opening up promising opportunities for the development of cross-border tourism. At the same time, the commune focuses on developing experiential and community-based tourism, associated with ethnic minority villages, traditional festivals, culinary culture, and pristine natural landscapes rich in borderland identity.
The commune’s central area is planned to grow strongly trade service associated with Hoanh Mo border gate economic area. In the East, it focuses on ecological tourism with spectacular natural landscapes, experienced visiting activities at Cao Son floral garden, Khe Van and Mooc river waterfall; Cao Ba Lanh and Cao Ly mountains, trekking… In the West, the locality will actively stimulate border travel; sightseeing and experience the “paradise” of silver grass fields, the “dinosaur spine” trail, and the sacred national border routes and boundary markers.

Currently, Hoanh Mo Commune has nearly 20 accommodation establishments offering a variety of options, from modern guesthouses to locally styled homestays, catering to tourists’ needs for relaxation and exploration. Notable examples include Binh Lieu Farmstay (Cao Son hamlet) and Huong Hoi Que Homestay (Khe Tien hamlet), both built at ideal elevations amidst lush green forests, offering a peaceful and nature-friendly retreat.
In addition, to effectively leverage the cultural heritage of local ethnic communities for tourism development, the commune is implementing the “Project on preserving and promoting the cultural values of the Dao people in connection with community-based tourism development in Song Mooc village, Dong Van commune (now Hoanh Mo commune) for the 2022–2025 period, with a vision to 2030.” With a well-planned approach and effective utilization of its natural, cultural, and human resources, Hoanh Mo commune is bidding to realize its goal of becoming a center for community-based, ecology, cultural and border tourism in the province.
